Very few anime can actually vie with Death Note. Code Geass comes pretty close (the end episodes are incredible, much better than the Death Note ones). And then there’s Steins;Gate. Slow at the start, but gains amazing pace and complexity later.
Netflix’s 2017 movie Death Note has a bad reputation. Fans of the manga and anime resented the story being Americanized, character motivations and arcs being altered, and the subtle changes to the cosmology of the universe.
Now, I realize that Death Note is a terrible series that no one should watch; it has many, MANY deplorable elements preventing any critical viewer from possibly enjoying it. Critical acclaim or no, Death Note is a poorly conceived and created excuse for entertainment, an experience I wholeheartedly regret, an experience I hope to dissuade any other potential viewers from undergoing.
You should be thinking “Why did the Death Note movie feel rushed?”
These constraints meant that vital plot points had to be abandoned and relationships fast-tracked, and the result was a movie that felt rushed. In truth, a single film was probably never enough to really capture the drawn-out battle of wits that is Death Note.
Is Netflix’s Death Note a studio disruptor?
Speaking of which, last Friday also saw the release of Netflix’s Death Note. The much-anticipated adaptation was sold as kind of an event film for the streaming service. And the fact that it was very bad, and specifically the ways in which it was bad, aren’t helpful for Netflix’s reputation as a studio disruptor.
Netflix was always taking a big chance by remaking a property held in such high regard by anime fans both at home in Japan and around the world, and unfortunately for them their English language, USA-set take on Death Note has not paid off.
