Typically, mangakas have assistants dedicated to each step in the drawing process. The mangaka might complete the majority of the work, but the assistants will edit, clean, and digitize their work.
A common query we ran across in our research was “What does a manga artist do?”.
A manga artist is a person who makes the art for comics or Japanese graphic novels. You might think of a manga artist, it’s somebody that works for a big publisher like Shueisha or KADOKAWA, but they are actually many roles for a manga artist. Some small freelancers might do advertisements for local businesses.
Although this could be true that a manga artist belongs to other than Japan might face some trouble to get published his/her hard work. But if drawing manga is your passion, then you can face any problem. You can become a successful mangaka like others.
How many days a week do manga artists work?
Many weekly manga artists work for a week with one day off, so for example Monday to Saturday. There may be three days dedicated to story creation, one day for writing it, one day for pencil drawing, and then one day spent on inking it. In my case, I worked for a monthly magazine so I provided my work a month in advance.
Are manga authors rich?
It should be no surprise that Eiichiro Oda, the creator behind the greatest selling manga of all time, One Piece, is also the richest Mangaka in the industry. Since the introduction of the Straw Hat Pirates’ adventure in 1997, the series has sold well over 450 million tankōbon volumes.
